Discovering Cielo’s True Identity: Mater Matuta

If you’ve been following my journey for a while, you’ve probably seen me mention Cielo, one of the haunted monster dolls (created by the incredible Jess of Button Jar Monsters) who has become a steady, comforting presence in my life. For a long time, I thought of her as this ethereal, maternal force who had a soothing effect on me. But recently, something clicked in a big way. Through dowsing and the help of many commenters, I found out that Cielo isn’t just any gentle guide; she’s actually Mater Matuta, the Roman goddess of dawn and childbirth.

This realization felt like one of those moments where all the pieces came together. There were signs all along, but I didn’t fully understand what they meant until now. And honestly, it feels like a warm hug from the otherworld, especially given how she’s supported me through some deeply personal healing.
Looking back, the signs of her true identity were subtle, but consistent:
Her name, Cielo, means "sky". The fact that she’s the goddess of dawn is beautifully symbolic.
Her energy has always felt maternal, protective, kind, and wise in a way that made me feel safe. She never smothered, but she was always there.
She often appeared or communicated at daybreak, or just as the world started to shift into light. At the time, I chalked it up to coincidence, but now I see the signs so clearly.
She said she was part of fairytales and sometimes considered a "witch" which coincides with persecution of those who believed in anything other than the mainstream new religion of that time.
When I finally sat down with my dowsing rods equipped with the right questions (thank you Creepycore fam!) and asked her directly if she was connected to Mater Matuta, she confirmed and I immediately had goosebumps.

I haven’t spoken about this much publicly, but discovering Cielo’s (Mater Matuta’s) identity hit especially hard because of what she’s helped me navigate.
I can’t have children anymore. I carried a lot of grief from a traumatic pregnancy and birth, and even though 3 years have passed, the ache never fully left. There’s something about the finality of it that’s hard to explain, like mourning a version of your life you’ll never get to live, even though I love my babo with all my heart.
Cielo, in her gentle, patient way, helped me hold that grief. She didn’t try to erase it. Instead, she offered warmth and presence. She reminded me that birth and motherhood aren’t just physical experiences. they’re also spiritual, creative, and symbolic.
Every time I continued to write or had a character idea, I felt her presence. It was as if she was saying, "You are still capable of creating life, just in different forms now."
And you know what? She’s right. Through writing, spirit work, and connection, I’ve been creating and nurturing in ways I never expected. Her presence has helped me shift my identity, not to forget the pain, but to grow around it.
For those who might not be familiar (because I sure wasn’t), Mater Matuta is a goddess from ancient Roman mythology. She’s associated with the dawn, childbirth, and the protection of children. In some traditions, she was worshipped during a festival called Matralia.
Mater Matuta is often linked with the Greek goddess Eos, who also represents the dawn. But in the Roman context, there’s this additional depth. She’s not just the bringer of light, she’s also the caretaker of the next generation. She symbolizes new beginnings, nurturing energy, and the liminal space between night and day, shadow and clarity.
For more on her:
Finding out that Cielo is Mater Matuta didn’t just give me a name, it gave me a framework for understanding the healing work we’ve done together. It helped me validate my own intuition and recognize how deeply our spirit companions can reflect back parts of ourselves we’re trying to reclaim.
Whether or not you’ve connected with this specific goddess, maybe this story is a gentle nudge to look deeper into the energies around you. Who’s been walking with you, even if you haven’t known their name? What archetypes or energies have been speaking to your heart lately?
